Factsheet on Neurological Conditions in Ireland
According to the HSE Strategic Review of Neurology and Neurophysiology Services (unpublished, National Hospitals Office, December 2007)over 700,000 people in Ireland are affected by neurological conditions
Neurological conditions are those that affect the brain and spinal cord. Many of these conditions are common and treatable but early intervention is the key
There are only 23 neurologists in Ireland to treat people with neurological conditions. This is the lowest number in Europe.
A report commissioned by the Government in 2003 recommended that one per 100,000 neurologists were need to serve the Irish population, i.e. 42 neurologists
Neurological conditions need to be identified and treated as soon as possible.Irish people can wait up to 2 years to see a neurologist for diagnosis and commencement of treatment.
Ireland has only 10 neurosurgeons, again the lowest in Europe. We should have a minimum of 16.
Ireland has the lowest number of consultants in neurorehabilitation in Europe and access to specialist neurorehabilitation in this country is very limited.
The Neurological Alliance of Ireland was established in 1998 to promote the development of services for people with neurological conditions in Ireland. Over 30 organisations make up this umbrella group
The NAI is committed to the development of an effective response by the health services to the needs of people with neurological conditions through:
1. Targeted investment in the development of neurological care services.
The establishment of a network of specialist services for the diagnosis and immediate care, rehabilitation and long term care of people with neurological conditions
2. Planning for neurological care:Development of an effective response to the needs of people with neurolgical conditions accross the health services.
There is a need to provide appropriate guidelines and training opportunties for staff working accross the health services in the identification and management of neurological conditions in order to provide integrated care for individuals at all stages of their condition. | |
