PRESS RELEASE TUESDAY 9TH MARCH 2010: WINNER OF NAI INNOVATION AWARD ANNOUNCED

"Website that Allows People to "try out" assistive technologies wins NAI Innovation Award"

It was announced today that a website which provides access to new technology for people with disabilities has won the inaugural Neurological Alliance of Ireland Innovation Award.

www.try-it. ie is the first website of its kind in Ireland and allows people a unique opportunity to access technological solutions to promote independence and aid day to day living. By providing an opportunity to try out equipment and devices, people can learn about whats available and select those that best meet their needs.

The Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI) Innovation Award is a new initiative aimed at recognising and highlighting the pioneering work being done by hospitals, charities, healthcare professionals and others in providing services to the over 700,000 people living with a neurological condition in Ireland.

The winner was announced at the NAI keynote conference for National Brain Awareness Week, "The Future for Neurological Conditions in Ireland, Innovations and Solutions in the Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin

Presenting the award, CEO of the Health Research Board, Mr Enda Connolly noted "This website is an outstanding practical example of research and technology making a real difference in the day to day lives of people with a neurological condition. It deserves this recognition as an innovative approach to sharing and maximising the resources available within our health system"

Mr Richard Phillips, Public Affairs Manager with Medtronic Ltd, sponsors of the award, said "The NAI Innovation Award is an important new step in promoting and rewarding initiatives in this area of healthcare"

"The response to the award in its first year exceeded all our expectations"says Anne Winslow, Chair of the Neurological Alliance, the umbrella group for neurological charities in Ireland. "The range and high standard of entries shows that neurology is a leader in innovation in our health service"

Other shortlisted entries included the development of a unique electronic patient record for people with epilepsy in Beaumont Hospital, a multiagency collaborative vocational programme for people with acquired brain injury led by Headway and a specialist-led epilepsy service in St James Hospital, Dublin.

The conference and award are part of events for National Brain Awareness Week which takes place nationwide from March 8th to 14th. Full details of events happening throughout Ireland can be found on the NAI website, www.nai.ie or by contacting 01 8724120.
