| The Future for Neurological Conditions in Ireland: A Challenge for Healthcare; an Opportunity for Change
An essential guide to neurological care in our health services
This landmark publication produced by the Neurological Alliance of Ireland brings together a wide range of stakeholders to provide an essential guide to neurological care in this country.
Over 700,000 people in Ireland are living with neurological conditions. Meeting their needs has been identified by the World Health organisation as the next significant challenge facing health systems worldwide. Part I of the publication assesses Ireland's ability to meet that challenge, highlighting that decades of underinvestment in this area means that we continue to lag far behind other European countries in many aspects of neurological care. It reviews the impact of this across the health services, as well as documenting the response to date, noting that our health system continues to lack a coherent, strategic approach to meeting the needs of people with neurological conditions and a real commitment to prioritising the kind of investment required.
Part II of the document points to the unique opportunities that are available to the Irish health services to design and deliver high quality neurological care. The expertise and experience of a range of service providers, both statutory and non statutory, a legislative framework which identifies and promotes the needs of those with disabling conditions and the benefits of increasing research and innovation to inform best practice all have the potential to deliver real benefits to people with neurological conditions. This is entirely dependent on a commitment to improving neurological care within our health services.
Leading neurospecialists, academics and health organisations, as well as individuals living with neurological conditions join with the NAI in calling for a national programme for neurological care within our health services. This prioritisation is critical in order to provide the strategic direction, leadership, and ongoing investment required to deliver the standard of care people with neurological conditions need and deserve from their health system.
