The NAI welcomed the commencement of work on the redevelopment of the National Rehabilitation Hospital earlier this week. The long awaited project will see the redevelopment of the old facility with a new fit for purpose unit.

However, NAI warns that the new development will not introduce any new beds into the system and thus will do little to tackle waiting lists for specialist rehabilitation.

The redevelopment will maintain the existing complement of 120 beds, this represents only half the number of beds required for our population.

The We Need Our Heads Examined campaign, supported by 17 NAI member groups, is scheduled to meet Minister Harris later this month and will be calling for new investment in 2018 to address the huge shortages in neurorehabilitation services throughout Ireland.
