The NAI response to the call for submissions on the Draft Strategic Plan for the National Medical Card Unit welcomes some positive changes aimed at improving contact with service users and simplifying the process of applying for a medical card.

However, overall the umbrella is diappointed that the plan fails to reflect the need for signficant reform of the medical card system, given the issues raised in the Keane report and integrating the role of the Clinical Advisory Group, established in January 2015, into the plan.

The NAI submission also stresses the issue of medical cards and eligibility for a range of community healthcare services which continues to represent a significant barrier for people with neurological conditions in accessing care.
