As events take place to mark National Carers Week this week, over 60,000 people in Ireland are caring for a person with a neurological condition.

These figures are extrapolated from the UK and come from a HSE review of neurology and neurophysiology services in Ireland, carried out in 2010.

A survey of neurological carers carried out by the NAI and Care Alliance in 2012 found that:

-respondents reported caring for the person for an average of 100 hours per week (including night time supervision)

-71% reported their own health had suffered as a result of caring

-over 70% reported that the person needed significant help with everyday tasks such as washing or dressing.
