The HSE announced on March 30th that plans are being developed to incrementally increase the provision of nurse specialists in neurology and deal with the remaining deficits in the country. This includes plans for "an extra 16 specialist nurses as a starting point to deal with the areas of greatest inequity".

The statement was issued in response to the Neurological Alliance of Ireland's (NAI) appearance before the Oireachtas Committee on Health on March 30th, highlighting their Patients Deserve Better campaign calling for action to tackle the shortage of one hundred neurology nurse specialists.

The campaign was launched in October 2021 and has held regional events around the country in Limerick, Cork, Galway, Waterford, Sligo and Dublin. Speaking in her opening statement to the Committee, NAI Executive Director Magdalen Rogers said that "investing in nurse specialists in neurology services is critical to reducing waiting lists and improving patient care".

The Patients Deserve Better campaign is supported by fourteen NAI member organisations. The campaign is calling for an incremental increase of up to twenty nurse specialists per year over the next five years to tackle the shortage of neurology nurse specialists.
