Umbrella representing thirty neurological organisations welcomes the launch of a service framework for neurology services but warns investment is critically needed

The Neurological Alliance of Ireland welcomes the launch today of a detailed framework to guide the development of neurology services in Ireland. Over 800,000 people in this country are affected by neurological conditions such as stroke, acquired brain injury, epilepsy, migraine, Parkinsons disease and multiple sclerosis. The model of care, launched today by the National Clinical Programme for Neurology, provides a comprehensive blueprint for the design and delivery of neurology services in our acute hospitals and the ongoing management of the needs of people with neurological conditions in the community.

Mags Rogers, Development Manager with the Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI) said today "The launch of the model of care is an important step forward in promoting best practice in the management of neurological conditions in this country, However, it is vital that funding is made available to support implementation as neurology services are struggling".

The Neurological Alliance of Ireland, in collaboration with the Neurology Programme, carried out a nationwide audit of neurology services in 2015. The findings, presented at the launch today, show a service under severe and increasing pressure with understaffing, lack of dedicated beds and the dearth of key supports in the community to cater for the long term needs of these patients, resulting in blocked beds and further pressure on our hospitals.

On the other hand, the model of care highlights the hope for thousands affected by neurological conditions if new treatments are made available and services put in place for those impacted by these life changing conditions.

Mags Rogers praised the Neurology Programme for working closely with people with neurological conditions and with the NAI in the development of the model of care "This should provide the template for the health service as to how to work in partnership to listen and understand the concerns and issues facing patients and their families".
