Today the Neurological Alliance of Ireland launched their pre budget submission, seeking investment in neurological care services in Budget 2024.

The national umbrella for over thirty neurological charities outlined their pre budget asks at an event attended by patient organisations and patient representatives from across the NAI umbrella in Buswells Hotel Dublin.

Oireachtas members attending the launch were told that access to vital services for the over 800,000 Irish people living with neurological conditions continues to be critically impacted by a combination of the disruptive effects of the COVID19 pandemic and decades of underinvestment pre pandemic.

The Neurological Alliance of Ireland are calling for priority investment in neurological care in Budget 2024

-Funding to fully staff a community neurorehabilitation team in each of the 9 CHOs around the country, as promised in the National Neurorehabilitation Strategy, a key commitment in the current Programme for Government

-Funding to put in place a multidisciplinary team for the only dedicated neurology service for Irish patients with long Covid in St James Hospital Dublin.

Oireachtas members were also thanked for their support for the umbrella organisation's campaign throughout 2022to tackle the shortage of nurse specialists in neurology services. Funding for 23 specialist nurses was announced in Budget 2023, which together with the rollout of the national headache and other pathways, will see a total of 32 new specialist nursing posts created in neurology services this year.
