A recent report on the Neurolink system has shown that it had led to a reduction in waiting lists, overbooked clinics, unnecessary emergency department presentations and the number of people attending hospital clinics.

The web based GP referral system was developed by Consultant Neurologist Dr Niall Tubridy in St Vincents Hospital Dublin.

Careful screening of GP contacts by a neurologist ensure more speed and efficiency in the processing of neurology referals.

The concept is now being used to support other disease areas, including the national cancer strategy.

With recent figures released by the HSE showing over 5000 people waiting more than a year for a neurology outpatient appointment, the NAI welcome the rollout of any initiatives to improve access to neurology services. However we point out that Ireland still has the lowest number of consultant neurologists in Europe, a situation that will continue to impact on the care and treatment of people with neurological conditions in this country.
