4.5.2012: Cuts affect access to new medications

An article in the Irish Independent this week highlighted NAI concerns that people with neurological conditions may miss out on new medications due to HSE cutbacks.

The HSE has effectively placed a freeze on the availability of new medicines under the high tech drugs scheme. Once medications are cleared by the costs "watchdog", the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics, doctors can presribe these medicines free of charge for patients.

However due to the high costs associated with the scheme, even drugs which have been approved have not been included in the high tech scheme.

NAI intends to monitor this situation closely and has contacted its members to assess the impact of this decision.
