28.4.2021 Irish Study Identifies Chronic Neurological Conditions as a Risk Factor for Severe Illness from COVID19

Irish researchers have for the first time identified the underlying conditions linked to severe illness from the COVID19 virus. The study, published in The Lancet medical journal, was carried out by the University of Medicine and Health Sciences RCSI and based on research with 20,000 people who had contracted COVID19 using data from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre.

People with chronic neurological conditions including dementia have a 40% increased risk of death from COVID. It is very important to bear in mind that the neurological conditions identified as at high risk are already included in the vaccination categories 5 & 7 in Ireland and have been prioritised for vaccination.

For the majority of people with neurological conditions their risk is no greater than the rest of the population.
