12.6.2012: Report highlights long waiting list for specialist rehabilitation

According to the National Rehabilitation Hospital 2011 Annual report, waiting times for admission to the NRH's brain injury comprehensive integrated inpatient programme range between 3 and 413 days.

More complex cases have longer waiting times, the average was 73 days.

The average wait for the spinal cord system of care programme was 48 days.

The report notes that "planning the patients ongoing journey to the community represents a challenge in the current economic environment with less funding available to support home discharges"

The NAI views the report as a further insight into the crisis in Ireland's rehabilitation services, with long waiting lists for specialist care and the critical absence of appropriate supports in the community.
