A Successful Outcome to 2025 NAI Advocacy Campaign with €3 Million Investment in Community Neuro-Rehabilitation Teams

Our 2025 #MyNeuroRehabTeam campaign was launched in March 2025, calling for investment in community neurorehabilitation teams in Budget 2026 in line with the commitment in the Programme for Government. 

On Budget Day October 2025, Minister for Disability Hildegarde Naughton announced €3million in dedicated funding for community neurorehabilitation teams.

#MyNeuroRehabTeam 2025 Advocacy Campaign calling for investment in Community Neurorehabilitation Teams

In March 2025, to coincide with National Brain Awareness Week, NAI launched its 2025 advocacy campaign  #MyNeuroRehabTeam calling for further investment in community neurorehabilitation teams: following on from its successful 2023 campaign. NAI held a series of regional meetings from March to June 2025 to highlight the need for regional equity of access to a community neuro-rehabilitation  team.

Neurological Alliance of Ireland Secures Commitments to Neurological Care in Programme for Government

Following a sustained campaign around the 2024 General Election, and a subsequent programme of engagement, NAI has successfully secured a number of specific commitments in the draft Programme for Government published on 15th January 2025 as follows:

  • Complete the national rollout of community neurorehabilitation teams
  • Develop more specialist inpatient rehabilitation beds
  • Implement community based multidisciplinary rehabilitation services in each RHA
  • Increase the number of neurology nurse specialists
  • Increase the number of consultant neurologists

The NAI will work closely with its members and other stakeholders throughout the coming months to begin to secure delivery on these commitments in 2025 and beyond. Check our news page on the website and our social media channels for regular updates on our 2025 advocacy programme.

ASK 1: Implement existing national strategies for neurological conditions

ASK 2: Deliver on Ireland's commitment under article 26 of the UNCRPD to provide comprehensive rehabilitation services

ASK 3: Ensure the current and future sustainability of the Neurological Care Services provided by voluntary sector organisations

Regional Neurology Campaign 2024

In March 2024, the NAI launched its Campaign for Regional Neurology Services. 

The campaign called for regional neurology services in 5 hospitals across the country, in Bantry, Wexford, Portlaoise, Letterkenny and Mayo hospitals. 

The campaign launched on Tuesday March 12th to coincide with National Brain Awareness Week. 

Representatives from the Neurological Alliance of Ireland highlighted the 2024 campaign at their presentation to the Oireachtas Committee on Health on May 15th 2024. The full recording of the meeting can be seen at NAI Presentation to the Oireachtas Committee on Health

CAMPAIGN OUTCOMES 

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly announced in October 2024 that he was funding Consultant Neurology Services in 5 regional hospitals in direct response to the NAI Campaign.

NAI Campaign for Community Neurorehabilitation Teams: November 2022 to October 2023

In November 2022, the Neurological Alliance of Ireland launched a nationwide advocacy campaign calling for funding for nine community neurorehabilitation teams nationwide, one in each of the 9 HSE CHO (community health organisation) areas. This ask comes directly from the National Neurorehabilitation Strategy: a key commitment within the current Programme for Government. 

When the campaign was launched in 2022, only 2 of the 9 teams were up and running nationwide. 

OUTCOMES FROM THE CAMPAIGN OCTOBER 2023

  • Over 10,400 e mails have been sent from the campaign website
  • More than 90 parliamentary questions submitted by TDs in support of the campaign asks
  • Four additional community neurorehabilitation teams funded 2022-2023

NAI Campaign for Neurology Nurse Specialists: October 2021 to October 2022

In October 2021, the Neurological Alliance of Ireland launched a nationwide advocacy campaign calling for funding to tackle the shortage of one hundred specialist nurses across neurology services

OUTCOMES FROM THE CAMPAIGN OCTOBER 2022

  • Over 11,000 e mails were sent to TD's from the campaign website
  • More than 90 parliamentary questions were submitted by TD's in support of the campaign asks
  • Funding for 23 specialist nurses was announced in Budget 2022 in direct response to the campaign
